In conjunction with the presentation of Biborton: Shift of Being in the Grotto Gallery this spring, artist Faria Firoz will discuss, in conversation with curator Kelley Tialiou, the development of her practice, from its earlier focus on figurative painting to its recent investigation of Bengali textile traditions. How can a contemporary artist in the diaspora transform the absence of certain traditional materials or tools into an opportunity for experimentation and interpretation, while still honoring aspects of her ancestral material culture that are central to her heritage? Makers and enthusiasts alike who are interested in contemporary interpretations of different craft traditions are especially encouraged to join us—we look forward to exploring this topic with you!
